Soda Lake ~ March 21st, 2013

Heather and I took a quick road trip - which lasted for only a few hours but really hit the spot. Road trips are unexpected journeys, not unlike the recent movie “The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey.” And much like the aforementioned movie, this road trip was a bit disappointing.

We had banked on seeing some wildflowers as this tends to be the season. But I’m fairly certain the wildflowers are undergoing another dismal year so you’ll have to resort to stock footage to see an abundance of contrasty - saturated flower pics.

So we moved on - on to Soda Lake, located within the Carrizo Plain National Monument. For Heather, I believe this only continued the disappointment. Soda Lake is arid - which is to say, it’s basically a desert (although it’s classified as a grassland). Within this grassland live 13 different endangered species, including the kangaroo rat and the kit fox. You’ll also find the largest photovoltaic array in the world = solar power.

Fortunately - we did eventually intercept HWY 168 - which is going off right now with some real grassland action. It was muy verde.

We finished with a gluttonous meal at Rooster Creek…which was nice. A good day - an unexpected journey - a reminder to get out.
